Whilst I enjoy nonfiction, history and folklore, I will own a love of femdom phone sex and bdsm fiction. Back when I was a kid, those mysterious men’s magazines in the dark wrapper were too risky to purchase. However, while at a yard sale my mother took me to, I bought a bag of pulp novels for a dollar and in that stash I found a trashy pulp novel entitled “Penny Candy”. This book was revolutionary for me. Up until that point, I’d been exposed to only bodice rippers and such that while trashy and sexy, were mostly male dominated virgin ravished by older man bullshit. The heroine of my forbidden tome, however, broke that mold. She started her adventure naive and taken advantage up and it ended with her taking control of males who’d abused her near the beginning. I was astounded! Who knew?
Soon, I discovered a rack at a local convenience store featuring Masquerade and Blue Moon books. The clerks didn’t look twice at those who bought them. I would go over the racks carefully, choosing only the books featuring a female in control. Yes, they were pornographic, probably offensive, but oh, so arousing. But oh, how I enjoyed reading them as they were so much more satisfying to me than male dominated fiction. When I discovered Anne Rice’s Beauty series, I was in heaven. There was an even mix of femdom and maledom, but the wicked imagination that created them entranced me. Lately, I’ve found Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series meet that same need, though her writing style makes me weep, knowing my own musings can never reach such a poetic level.
The villianess of the series is one Melisande Shahrizai. The heroine, Phedre, both fears and adores the level of control this wicked dominatrix has over her. While she hates her deeds, she loves her on a personal level and willingly submits to the wicked lady. Melisande is one of the strongest femdom role models in modern fiction. While her deeds in the earlier books earn her a death sentance, she always escapes it, even having her sentence commuted to permanent exile due to her actions being done for love, redeeming her character to some degree.
Anyway, I’m happy that current trends are bringing erotic fiction out of the closet. I’ll be posting some along as I read them, suggestions for the submissive boys out there who appreciate a love of literature as well. With mainstream publishing houses finally getting on the bdsm bandwagon, I expect the next few years to be very interesting in terms of more dominant female characters in leading positions, no relegated to a simple… or even not so simple villainess.
